Long before the internet, humiliation and hurtful comments were rife. Vinegar Valentines were a way of sending taunts, hurtful messages and spiteful comments to people. Just as internet trolls of today, these messages were anonymous and left the sender free to pick on people they didn’t like the look of or the things they did.
